· AMERICAN LITERATURE (Year) Grade Level: 11-12 Prerequisite: Successful
completion of English 2. American Literature is a traditional survey
course which can follow either a chronological or thematic outline
of our American culture from the early 17th Century to the present,
as seen through various literary works. The different genres of
literature, namely the drama, the novel, poetry, nonfiction, and
short fiction, are investigated, read, studied, and written about
through classical and modern Core Works. Among these are: Arthur
Miller's, The Crucible; Twain's Huckleberry Finn; Fitzgerald's The
Great Gatsby; Poe's The Fall of The House of Usher and the poetry
of Frost, Hughes, and Brooks, to name a few. Also note-taking, journal
type works, oral presentations, extensive vocabulary study, and
some new literary terms, together with standard grammar, usage,
and punctuation lessons can be expected.
