· English Language Development Program (ELD) These courses provide for the
development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills of students
whose primary language is a language other than English. Three sequential levels
of ELD are offered. Entry into the program is based on reading, writing and/or
oral test scores.o BEGINNING ELD (Year) For students who are newly arrived in
the United States and have very little or no understanding of English. The development
of oral language and listening skills is the primary focus; however, reading
and writing in English is introduced. Based on acceptable student performance
on exit criteria and teacher recommendation, students will advance to Intermediate
ELD . This is a two-period core class. o INTERMEDIATE ELD (Year) For students
who have acquired a basic vocabulary and some ability to read and write English.
It continues the development of listening and speaking skills; reading and writing
are formally presented. Based on acceptable student performance on exit criteria
and teacher recommendation, students will move on to Advanced ELD. This is a
two-period core class.o ADVANCED ELD (Year) Continues the acquisition of vocabulary
and the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Based
on acceptable student performance on exit criteria and teacher recommendation,
students will move on to English 1-2 SDAIE*. This is a one-period class, but
Reading Skills is required.
