Financial Aid
Seniors,
AHS Cash for College(Financial Aid) Workshop is Tuesday, October 4th from 6:00pm-8:00pm in the AHS College and Career Center. This workshop is for seniors and parents to complete the FAFSA or Dream Act application. Seniors will fill out the application and parents are there to support with documents and information. There will be financial aid experts to help families navigate through the application process. In addition to the AHS Cash for College event, Cabrillo will be hosting several events. Please see the attached flyer for Cabrillo's Cash for College dates.

This workshop is for seniors and parents to complete the FAFSA or Dream Act application. Seniors will fill out the application and parents are there to support with documents and information. The new law, AB 469, requires all high school seniors to complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) before graduating from high school. There will be an opt out option for families who do not wish to complete the application. Students who opt out will not be eligible for free money for college. Please see your counselor to opt out.
Please join us at our Cash for College event on October 4th and bring your Chromebook and have access to the documents attached (Gathering the Documents Needed to Apply).
Before the workshop, please do the following:
1. Review the following documents and create your FSA ID
a. What financial aid application am I applying to? (attached to email)
b. Gathering the Documents Needed to Apply(attached to email)
c. Who is my parent on the financial aid application? (attached to email)
d. If applying to the FAFSA application, student will create a FSA ID and the parent will create their own FSA ID(only if the parent has a SSN and only one ID). Link to create FSA ID (Note: CA Dream Act applicants do not apply for a FSA ID)
AHS will be holding our Annual Virtual Financial Aid Workshop on October 12th from 6:00pm-7:00pm. The links will be emailed to seniors and families. This workshop is for seniors and their parents to complete their financial aid applications. Seniors will only be applying to one financial aid application, either the FAFSA or the Dream Act.
What financial aid application am I applying to?
FAFSA: Who can apply to the FAFSA?
US Citizens, permanent residents, eligible non-citizens, T Visa Holder
DREAM Act: Who can apply to the CA Dream ACT?
Undocumented Students, With or without DACA, TPS Status, U Visa Holders
Additional requirements: Must be eligible to submit the non-resident tuition exemption/Males 18-25 yrs. Must register for Selective Service
Please attend the meeting for the application to which the senior will be applying. If the student meets the criteria for the FAFSA, please attend the FAFSA workshop. If the student meets the criteria for the Dream Act, please attend the Dream Act workshop.
Each workshop will last about an hour. If families have another computer or phone, seniors should apply while we are going through the application presentation. After the presentation, there will be a time for general questions and students will fill out a form that asks if they have any additional financial aid questions.
Before the workshop, please do the following:

Gathering the Documents Needed to Apply
The FAFSA questions ask for information about you (your name, date of birth, address, etc.) and about your financial situation. Depending on your circumstances (for instance, whether you’re a U.S. citizen or what tax form you used), you might need the following information or documents as you fill out the application:

Your Social Security number (it’s important that you enter it correctly on the FAFSA form!)

Your parents’ Social Security numbers if you are a dependent student

Your driver’s license number if you have one
-
Your Alien Registration number if you are not a U.S. citizen

(2019) Federal tax information or tax returns including IRS W-2 information, for you (and your spouse, if you are married), and for your parents if you are a dependent student:

IRS 1040
-
Foreign tax return, IRS 1040NR, or IRS 1040NR-EZ

Tax return for Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, or Palau

Records of your untaxed income, such as child support received, interest income, and veterans noneducation benefits, for you, and for your parents if you are a dependent student

Information on cash; savings and checking account balances; investments, including stocks and bonds and real estate (but not including the home in which you live); and business and farm assets for you, and for your parents if you are a dependent student
Keep these records! You may need them again. Do not mail your records to us.
